This summit was activated by myself, accompanied by Jimmy & Liam on Thursday 12th August 2004, although unfortunately we had to abandon it without qualifying for the point.

Back in the car after Long Mountain - Beacon Ring MW-026, we headed around past Welshpool and across towards Mynydd-y-briw NW-060. QSOing mobile with John BVE, we discussed the thunderstorm moving from south to north. However it looked very clear in the direction of NW-060, so we pressed on. We parked by the gate and walked up the steep track to the transmitter on the summit. Hearing distant rumbles in the advancing black cloud to the south, I rapidly worked John BVE and Steve INK, contest style (no beam, just rubber duck). Sadly, then no more CQ calls were answered, and I decided it was appropriate to get me and the kids back to the car, thankfully only 5 minutes walk away. We sat in the car, had something to eat and drink and watched as the storm passed rapidly over and moved away to the north, and the thunder ceased. Jimmy & Liam agreed to wait in the car while I ran back up to get the other two contacts. Reaching the summit for the second time, I called CQ, but again no answer. Then, out of the blue, a flash of sheet lightning and a very loud crack of thunder. I had read this one very wrongly, and descended again without hesitation. This time, I decided to admit defeat and go home!

Tom on the summit of Mynydd-y-briw NW-060    Liam & Tom on Mynydd-y-briw

This failed activation was corrected on Thursday 26th August 2004, again with Jimmy and Liam in attendance.  Following the day's earlier activations of Heath Mynd WB-007 and Stingwern Hill MW-030, it was very tempting to make it a hat-trick of new ones by tackling Rhialgwm GW/NW-046, but time was cracking on, and we had a score to settle with Mynydd-y-briw GW/NW-060, which rudely double-booked us with an electrical storm on the day of our intended 2004 activation.  The weather forecast from the Beeb was spot on today though - lots of cloud, but not a hint of rain - and so we did not anticipate a repeat of being beaten off the hill after just two contacts by the flashy bangy stuff.  There is space for a couple of cars either side of the gate at the bottom of the access road to the farm and transmitter on this hill, so again we walked up this short but steep segment from here.  We set up on the true summit behind the transmitter mast, which unlike many other such things, never seems to cause any problems with operating.  Four contacts and 13 minutes later, we were packing up and descending once again, with the tediously long drive across Shropshire and Cheshire to follow...
