This summit was jointly activated on Sunday 1st August 2004, by Shirley M0YLS/P and myself, accomapnied by Jimmy. The summit had also earlier been qualified by Steve G1INK, Keith G0OXV, Alan M1EYO, Stuart G0MJG and Mike G4BLH, all taking advantage of the one-day-only special permission granted by the landowner Christopher Mason-Hornby. After a spot of lunch (bacon sandwiches and homemade tomato soup) in the Slaidburn Heritage Centre tearoom, we parted company with Steve G1INK who was off to Easington Fell G/SP-012 next before his final summit of Longridge Fell G/SP-014. However, 30 seconds driving later, and there was Shirley M(W)0YLS looking for the tearoom in Slaidburn village! After I revealed to Shirley that, at present, there was no-one in the tearoom (from the SOTA group), she altered her plans and followed me up to the Cross-of-Greet layby at the summit of the Slaidburn to Bentham road, where we parked to commence our ascent.
Unlike last year, the weather was hot, sunny and clear, giving a completely different perspective to the walk, and it seemed much better underfoot and a lot easier than last year. We met Keith, Stuart and Mike on their way down, and stopped briefly for a chat. On the summit, we used a combination of Shirley's SOTA Beam and my FT-817 to make the contacts, while Jimmy took a few photographs and made sure everyone had a refreshing drink of water.
Following descent, we returned to the tearoom for some more food and drink (their homemade lemonade was now going down very well on this hot day), and then headed South West to conquer Fair Snape Fell G/SP-007. Callsign today was GX4BJC/P, the club call of the International Short Wave League (ISWL). See my radio page or click on the link for further details. Thanks to the following stations, all worked in FM mode:
